Balloons carrying a large quantity of cigarettes have interfered with air travel in Lithuania, as Lithuania's primary air hub was compelled to shut down for several hours when multiple of them entered the airspace of Lithuania.
Flight Disruptions
The operational halt led to the cancellation of 30 flights affecting thousands of passengers, with officials warning that further disruptions were possible throughout Monday.
Law Enforcement Actions
Officials confirmed that 25 meteorological balloons were spotted infiltrating Lithuania from the border with Belarus, with two balloons ending up right above the airport's airspace.
Up to 14 of the weather balloons launched over the weekend passed through the capital region, which is situated near Lithuania's capital city and near the frontier with Belarus.
Illegal Goods Seizure
At least 11 balloons transporting numerous containers of contraband smoking materials have been collected so far, though more recoveries are anticipated, according to customs agents.
International Illegal Trade
While creating issues, authorities noted that "Balloons with contraband - Belarusian smoking products - are not unusual in the Baltic region and Poland."
Since January, over five hundred weather devices have been recorded entering Lithuania from Belarus, while nearly a thousand were recorded last year.
Neighboring Country Impact
At the same time, the north-eastern Polish territory, which similarly neighbors Belarus, has registered in excess of one hundred incidents in which contraband was flown from its neighbor using the meteorological equipment.
Smuggling Techniques
Regarding inquiries concerning why criminal organizations employ a method that is especially affected by weather conditions rather than simpler to operate drones, authorities explained that "Weather devices are basic instruments used by contraband transporters - they are cheaper than drones for carrying smoking materials from Belarus."
Law Enforcement Objectives
Authorities continued that "The goal of law enforcement is to confiscate the maximum possible volumes of smuggled items and to detain organisers and involved individuals so that this activity become not financially viable and create minimal risk to commercial air travel."
European Tensions
Such border infiltrations occur during a time of growing anxiety in Europe following numerous drone incursions that have created aviation problems across the region.
Similar occurrences in adjacent nations have prompted European leaders to fast-track conversations about enhancing aerial security throughout the continent.
