European Union Might Respond to ‘Unwarranted’ US Travel Restrictions, Official Says

The EU could “act quickly and firmly” against what it deems “unjustified” visa bans issued by the United States against five Europeans working on fighting digital hatred and disinformation, an EU official stated.

EU Officials Decry US Action as ‘Coercion’

Officials from Europe including Emmanuel Macron charged the US administration of “coercion and intimidation”, following the visa restrictions were placed on individuals who have been central to efforts to enact legislation governing American tech companies.

“For far too long, ideologues in Europe have led coordinated campaigns to coerce American platforms to punish American viewpoints they oppose,” stated a senior US official online. “The current administration will no longer tolerate these egregious acts of extraterritorial censorship.”

Widespread Condemnation From EU Nations

Germany, Spain, the UK and a chorus of EU officials joined the French president in condemning the move.

The restrictions were enacted this week on a former EU commissioner involved in crafting the bloc’s Digital Services Act (DSA), along with four activists fighting false information, including two in Germany and two in the UK.

An Escalating Conflict Over Regulation

This European legislation is viewed by Washington as a form of censorship, while EU authorities argue the regulations are essential to combat inflammatory language and falsehoods.

This row risks becoming a facet of a much broader existing political and ideological clash between the current US administration and Europe.
